Chapter 44: Drawing a Line Between Them
“Why are you here?” Daniel asked, “I am not working today. So, whatever it is, keep it till I am ready.” His cold eyes pierced through Selene’s, attempting
to see into her soul.
“I wanted to talk to you about something,” she said, glancing at James and Wendy, who had already taken a seat. It was clear that she was hoping to speak with him privately. But Daniel was not someone to give people a face, so he ignored her gesture and nodded to her.
“Go ahead,” he urged her, and she looked around.
“I am hoping to speak to you privately,” she could not help but say. She would rather die than say why she had come while his mother was there. Not too long ago, she had fallen into the old woman’s trap and said she was not dating Daniel. If she opened her mouth this moment to ask him out, she would be slapping herself in the face.
Daniel did not have the energy for her nonsense, but he wanted to get rid of her, so he gestured towards the living room they had just left, and they both moved there.
Now alone with him, Selene became nervous. She looked up to meet his eyes, which held no emotion, and started to lose her confidence.
“Are you going to talk? Don’t waste my time,” he said, when he was her hesitating. Selene was taken back by his tone.
“I heard that you got divorced,” she said, and he frowned. This is property © NôvelDrama.Org.
“It seems people have nothing better to talk about,” he said. “So, why are you here, then?”
“I wanted to know if you had time to go out this weekend. I know you were married all this while we could not go anywhere nice or else people would talk,” she said.

“My wife only stepped out the door, and you want to come in? Are you addicted to being a mistress?” Daniel asked, and blood drained from her face. She could not believe what he had
sald
“You are not married anymore,” she pointed out
“So, you have been waiting all this while for my wife to leave?” Daniel was extremely triggered by her words.
“I have not,” she started to defend herself.
“Even though I have warned you several times, you would still come around and take the initiative to hold my hand. How many photos did reporters take of this scene? Was it to pressure my wife to leave or to embarrass her till she had nowhere to hide?” he asked, and she looked at him incredulously.
“Why do you make me sound like some scheming woman?” she asked, “You don’t believe. me?”
“Why should I believe you? I saw the security footage of the pool. Didn’t you jump in to frame Anya?” he asked, “And the rumors in the press: would the tabloids that have written so much about you believe you are innocent if I said that you hurried over to ask me out the moment my wife left? Would they say that you have inserted yourself into my relationship? Will they think that you have managed to pursue the legal wife away? I wonder what they will write.”
Daniel asked.
“You threaten me? Daniel, my father’s company has a collaboration with yours!” She responded in panic. She did not bother to mention that she was his assistant. She doubted it would be of any use. She knew this man well enough to know that he could make her the talk
the country if he wanted to. He would not even bat an eye. What did she do?
Daniel looked at the face that looked just like Anya and felt disgusted. He had been tricked, and he was sure there was a conspiracy going on. He felt it was best to investigate while they still thought he did not know.
“So, you know you only have a work relationship with me, yet you parade around as thought you are my mistress,” he said, taking a step closer. “It can’t be that you think I have to marry you since I got divorced, right?”
“Why are you talking like this? You have never complained before now,” she said, tears filling her eyes. She knew he was an intelligent man and had never hidden her admiration for him even though he was married. She even changed her face for him. What was she to him?
“You are testing my patience, Selene. I might have ignored your antics before, but I have no intention of tolerating you now. See yourself out,” Daniel said, and Selene turned and rushed out as her tears fell like rain.
Even though they were in the living room, those in the dining room had heard their conversation clearly. Their eyes descended on him as he walked into the dining room. James sighed at the words that had just left his friend’s mouth. He seemed to be a quiet person who rarely spoke, but he and his friends knew that he quite had the poisonous tongue when he opened his mouth.
He had barely taken a seat when his mother looked up from her plate to say, “So you know how to pursue flies, but I was sitting there like shit all these years. I wonder how many times Anya had to hear about you and your insect from those gossip magazines.”
Daniel, who had just taken a seat, felt as though his mother had ripped open another wound. He placed his hand on his temple and massaged greatly. He did not refute her words. He knew Selene liked him, but he did not stop her. He knew Anya was in love with him, but he did not refute the rumors. He did not care. The more time passed, the more he felt he was not worthy of Anya. Seeing the mood on the table, Michel–cleared his throat and changed the topic.

“That project I talked about last night, the one in Lincoln City, there is a meetup for potential investors. You should come along,” James said. Daniel’s heart leaped when he heard the words, Lincoln City. His Anya was there. But when he thought about how he did not have the face to see her again, he deflated greatly.
“Anya is there; you should at least use this opportunity to see her,” James said, catching

Wendy’s attention.
“Anya is in Lincoln City?” she asked, and James nodded.
“Then he should go! What are you hesitating for?” She turned to Daniel and scolded him.
“I don’t have the face to ask Anya to come back to me.” Daniel looked away from his mother’s angry eyes. He felt a deep sense of shame. He had not fulfilled any responsibility as a husband while he was married to Anya. Even though all others could be ignored, he did not fulfill the most fundamental of his duties: to protect her.
“Not only do you not have the face, you don’t have the right after what you did. Who asked you to bring Anya back? Don’t you have any shame? You did not look in the mirror before. dreaming? How are you worthy of dreaming such things? I am asking you to go and apologize Tike a proper human
being!” she scolded him, swinging her fork. In the air as she spoke, as though she was ready to stab someone.
“Mom really knows how to beat someone when they are down,” he said with a bitter smile.
“Should I applaud you then? You divorced your wife a day after her mother died, and you want me to throw you a party?” She sneered at his defeated figure. When James heard her words, his brows jumped into his hairline. Could it be that this was the emergency Anya had called Daniel about and he divorced Anya for it?
