Chapter 24 He Recognized Her
The fast-food restaurant she worked for paid her at the end of the day for the number of hours she worked.
Gwenyth arrived at the restaurant at 3:00 p.m. and worked until 10:30 p.m.
By now, most of the customers had left, except for two at a table in the corner.
As she finished tidying up, Gwenyth looked over at them.
It was a young girl in her early twenties and a boy of about eighteen. They were sitting there motionless, as if they had been here for quite some time.
There was no food on the plate in front of them, and the fries and drinks had long been finished.
After a moment's hesitation, she walked up to them and asked politely, "Excuse me, may I take these away?"
The young girl looked at her coldly and then looked away, ignoring her. The boy was equally cold, but unlike the young girl's ignorance, he replied, "Take it away, W-A-I-T-R-E-S-S."
The boy said the last word very slowly and in a somewhat heavy tone, as if he was saying it through clenched teeth.
Gwenyth thought the two of them were a bit weird, but she didn't bother with their attitude and collected all the used napkins on plates and took them away.
When she came back out after dumping the garbage, the corner booth was empty.
Only the shop staff were in the restaurant now.
Gwenyth found the manager and got the money for her work. It was $80 in total.
After she changed her clothes in the dressing room, she picked up her bag and left.
The air conditioning was on in the restaurant, and when she went outside, she felt a hot breeze for a second.
The outside was like a big steamer, and she started to sweat on her neck within a few minutes of walking.
The restaurant was near the subway station, and even now in the night, there were still a lot of people coming and going on the street.
As she walked towards her home, Gwenyth took out her phone to check it and found that she had a couple of missed calls from Ursula.
She sent a message to Ursula on WhatsApp, "Mom, I'll be home soon."
Ursula didn't reply.
'Mom should be asleep already.' Gwenyth thought.
She stuffed her phone into her bag and walked on.
When she reached her neighborhood, she sensed something was wrong.
In addition to the light from the street lamps, she noticed that she was being followed by a white light that came from the headlights of a car.
There were a lot of cars passing by, and at first she didn't take it seriously.
She turned around and noticed a black car driving about 16 feet from her.
The car was moving very slowly and was right behind her.
When she stopped, the car stopped as well.
The driver switched from low beam to high beam, and her eyes squinted into the incandescent light so that she could see nothing but two intense clusters of light in her vision.
She instinctively raised her hand to block the light from the car. She closed her eyes and quickly opened them.
Looking through her fingertips at the strange car, she wondered if it was Edison's car.
She couldn't see who was in the car, and because the light was so strong, she couldn't see the license plate.
As she raised her hand to block the strong light and closed her eyes a little, the car suddenly started and rammed right into her.
She was close to the car. As the car suddenly accelerated, she didn't even have a chance to dodge.
Just as she was about to be hit by the front of the car, she was pulled aside by a strong force as an arm came around her waist.
The car almost passed her legs.
She felt like she heard a buzzing sound in her ears, and then she was freaked out, like her brain had stopped working.
By the time she rolled to the side of the road, she had come to her senses as she felt the pain of her elbow scraping the ground.
The arm wrapped around her waist was still there. The person was holding her waist so tightly that she almost couldn't breathe.
She vaguely remembered a large hand shielding her head as she fell to the ground. She was held tightly now, and her cheek was buried in a hard chest.
She smelled a faint mint scent, with a hint of tobacco.
The smell was somehow familiar.
"What are you wondering about when you're walking?"
A voice that sounded almost like a low, grumpy growl rang out over her head.
She looked up, met Edison's eyes with rage, and scrambled to her feet.
"Thank you."
She reached out to help Edison up, but he slapped her hand away.
Then the back of her hand turned red, and she felt numb and hurt.
Edison rested one hand on the ground and stood up on his own.
He dusted off his pants with his right hand and gently held his left wrist. Noticing that his left wrist was slightly swollen, Gwenyth stepped forward to examine it. But he turned sideways to avoid her.
"What?"
He frowned and looked at her warily.
"Did you get hurt?"
"None of your business."
"Let me see your wrist."
"I said it's none of your business."
The man raised his voice, almost yelling at her again in a low voice.
She had just been in quite a shock, and now she was being yelled at by Edison again and again, and she suddenly got angry.
"What are you throwing a tantrum about?"
She took a step forward, stood in front of him, and forcefully pulled his left hand up.
He frowned in pain, "Let go."
Gwenyth looked down and carefully examined Edison's left wrist in the light of the street lamp. It was swollen and red. It didn't look like a sprain, and it was very likely that his bone was injured.
"Let's go to the hospital."
She reached out for a cab, but Edison took her hand in his and pulled it back.
"Can you drive?"
"I can't."
"Didn't I teach..." Edison swallowed the words on the tip of his tongue.
He had taught her to drive, but she was young then.
Besides, she was too poor to learn to drive now.
He didn't say anything else, but Gwenyth froze at what he had just said.
What did he mean?
He had taught her how to drive?
He was three years older than she was. He got his license when he was eighteen while she was only fifteen. And the day he got his new car, he took her for a ride.
At that time, he found a very open place and asked her if she wanted to try driving.
She nodded. Then they switched seats, and he patiently taught her by hand.
"You..."
She was tempted to ask if he recognized her.
But before she could ask anything, Edison had already stopped a cab and dragged her into it.
On the way to the hospital, she was so confused.
She realized that Edison knew who she was and had recognized her for a long time.
Since he recognized her, why did he say those awful things to her?
'Did you lose your virginity to a casual guy?'
'Speaking of deception, you are the best.'
These were the questions he had asked, and was this the impression she had left on Edison?
"Pay the cab."
At this point, she heard a voice in her ear.
"Oh," she replied. And as she turned her head, she saw Edison push open the car door and get out of the car.
After a moment of mind wandering, the car was already parked in front of the hospital.
After paying for the cab, she quickly got out and followed Edison into the emergency room.
Edison's wallet and cell phone were in his car, so he had nothing in his pockets.
He drove to Gwenyth's place because he needed to talk to her. He parked outside her neighborhood and was about to call Gwenyth, and at that time he saw her.
She was walking down the street and was very close to her neighborhood. A car was slowly following her.
She seemed to sense that something was wrong and suddenly stopped to turn around, and the black car stopped as well.
Seeing that Gwenyth might have been followed, he got out of the car and tried to get the license number of the car. However, it suddenly rushed towards Gwenyth, who was just standing there.
His mind went blank. He didn't have time to think about it and immediately rushed up and pulled Gwenyth away.
As she fell to the ground, he propped himself up on the ground with his left hand, possibly breaking his left arm in the process.
He was furious with pain. And when he thought of Gwenyth standing by the side of the road, not knowing how to dodge like a fool, he became even angrier... Content is © by NôvelDrama.Org.
