M&M FOODS, NEW YORK. A knife could slice the tension in the boardroom. Asher tapped his foot on the floor anxiously. He had expected his parents to arrive at the due date, and they had to go all out to humiliate him by allowing the board members to come before them. “How long are we expected to wait for your parents, young man?” Jason asked sternly. “They-they would be here soon.” Asher stuttered in response. The door opened, letting in Darren and Leila. They looked chilled despite keeping others waiting. “We do not appreciate your disregard, Mr and Mrs Taylor.” One of the members said. Darren scoffed. “You all asked for it. Maybe I might respect you if you aren’t acting so shady. How dare any of you suggest selling my company after so many years? My family and I have worked tirelessly over the years. You can’t endure a bit of a challenging time. How shameful!” He hissed. “Why won’t you just trust my son to handle everything?” Leila questioned. Mr Anderson, another member, snorted. “We have been trusting him for the past four months. All he has done is shatter our hopes. We have huge stakes in this company that you claim solely as yours. You do not expect us to sit still and do nothing.” “All I need is a few more months. Give me three extra months.” Asher pleaded “To do what?” Jason asked calmly. “Do you intend for the value to drop so badly that we all lose? And as for you, Darren. We wouldn’t be here now if you had made good financial decisions. At least for the hundreds of people under your company, do something to help them, not just yourself.” Darren clenched his fist tightly and pointed at Jason. “Watch your tone with me, Dr Remington. I am not going to act cordial with you to appear sensitive. I have had enough of every one of you. We are not selling, and that is final. M&M will rise above the waters, and that is a promise. And when that happens, I will take you all out individually.” He growled. “I think we should leave. It’s useless being here now.” Anderson suggested. Everyone agreed and prepared to leave. “Yes, you all should leave. Runoff like the cowards you are. What was I expecting from people like you who aren’t certified businessmen? You can go to hell for all I care. Get out!” Darren yelled. Silence settled in the room as soon as the others left. Asher gnashed his teeth hard; the veins in his pocket popped out in anger. “You just had to make a fool of me, didn’t you?” He growled at his father. Darren grunted in response, not feeling any guilt. Leila sighed. “Don’t fault your father. Those people had to hear the truth about their crass behavior, whether they liked it or not. Seeing that they can easily turn away from us is so shameful. M&M will forever hold the reigns of the packaged food industry.” “Don’t you get it?” Asher questioned. “This is no longer your time of reign. It’s over. X&J Foods has surpassed us by a great margin. We can’t even develop any new product that might draw our customers in because no financial institute is willing to loan us any money. Our small sales are to cover the other minimal expenses. We are broke.” “What if we liquidate some of our assets?” Leila suggested. Asher made a gaggling sound. “I guess your husband isn’t exactly open to you. The only thing you have to your name is the house. Everything was liquidated to invest in the scam real estate he did then. There is nothing else to look up to except this company.” “Then there has to be a way for us to retain it in the family.” She said. “Then someone has to be willing to pour out just enough to keep it afloat.” Dennis, who had been quiet, snapped his finger. “Then we don’t have to ever think about selling. I do have some gold stashed away. We can get that while you find Nina. She gives us great product ideas, and then we launch the product and make great sales in the market. You at least know where she is, right?” Asher scratched his neck. “I don’t know her contact. Neither do I have any idea where she might be. Don’t forget she has no family.” He cursed loudly, slamming the table hard. “If you ever let loose of my hard work after all of these years, Asher. I will kill you with my bare hands.” Darren threatened as he stormed out of the room. “Mum?” Asher called out as Leila stood up. “For once, can you not go after him like a lost puppy? Please.” “I knew him long before I met you. And this is a fruit of our years of toiling. Don’t you think it is unfair that we have to lose it like this?” Saying a piece of her mind, Leila followed her husband. Asher yelled as he threw the bottle of water in front of him at the wall. Getting a grip on himself, he unlocked his tab and searched the files. There has to be something to latch onto. Aside from the internal financial crisis, their market rate hasn’t exactly fallen so badly. If they take proper measures, the company will stay alive. Asher got up and paced the floor back and forth. If he finds Nina, then he can save the company’s stock. Nina is gullible. All he has to do is portray Andrea as the villain; he would come up with something vital cause no one will respect a friend who snatched her supposed best friend’s man. Everything will go smoothly with Nina on board and back in his home. Feeling hopeful, he picked up his phone and dialed his private investigator friend, Ian. “I bet you didn’t just think of me out of goodwill; you probably just need my help.” Ian mocked on the other end. Asher rolled his eyes. “A help that you will get good money ’cause that’s all you ever need.” There was a shift on the other end. “As long as it earns, I am all for ears. So, what would that be?” And he went ahead to explain his situation.
