Chapter 72 You Don’t Have to Torture Me
The tall man ran towards Lexie, and the light from the headlights shone on his back, dazzling.
Before Lexie passed out, she only heard a familiar voice, she recognized it as the man’s voice, but was not familiar with the anxiety and concern.
She must have made a mistake.
The black car was driving smoothly on the J City Highway.
Lexie was woken up by the warm breeze in the car, and opened her eyes in a daze to see the man driving in the front row, his side face cold, his slender fingers on the steering wheel.
“You are awake?”
Alan saw her in the rearview mirror, “Are you okay?”
Lexie moved her arms before she realized she was covered in his suit jacket, faintly smelling of cologne and tobacco.
She was stunned and clenched her fist before holding out her hand in a gesture.
[I’m okay.]
“Are you hurt?”
[No.]Please check at N/ôvel(D)rama.Org.
“I’ll take you to the hospital.”
[No, I’ll just go back and have some rest.]
Even though the temperature in the car had been turned up high, her entire body was soaked in seawater, and the feeling of walking in the ocean breeze for over two hours was still in her memory, making her wince at the thought.
[Thank you for picking me up, I’m tired and want to take a nap.]
Alan frowned and nodded slightly, “Go ahead.”
There was no movement in the backseat, and the man’s gaze skimmed over the rearview mirror to see the woman cowering inside his suit, looking as if she was a stray cat that had been bullied, and his frown deepened at that moment.
Lexie wasn’t actually asleep, she buried her face inside the suit. Alan found her so quickly, perhaps he knew what Tina was going to do to her, but he acquiesced.
It would be a long drive back to J City, and the journey was wordless.
The car drove into the garage of the Howard’s villa.
Alan carried Lexie out of the back seat, her lips pale as she shrank into the suit and shivered.
“Mr. Alan.”
“Where’s Kevin? Tell him to come upstairs.”
After dropping these words coldly, Alan directly carried Lexie away.
The maids were shocked to see that Alan was carrying Lexie in his arms.
“What happened?”
As soon as Kevin saw Lexie, his face immediately changed, “What did you do to her again?”
Alan said unhappily, “I just got her back, what do you think I did to her?”
Kevin clenched his fists, his face pale.
If Lexie wasn’t still unconscious, he would have had to ask what Alan really wanted at this moment.
Kevin took the ear thermometer and took the temperature, “She has a fever.”
“Is it serious?”
“It depends on the individual’s constitution,” Kevin didn’t even look at Alan and said without good grace, “A fever can hurt the brain of someone with a poor constitution, or trigger other illnesses. She was not well before, and she still has injuries on her feet!”
“Why on earth did she get like that? Where did you bring her back from?”
Looking at the dirty stain on Lexie’s face, Kevin couldn’t suppress his anger and yelled out directly.
Outside the door, Diana and Marry, who had been eavesdropping, were startled.
Diana was eagerly about to open the door and enter, but was pulled back by Marry.
Alan, however, didn’t get angry and kept his gaze on Lexie’s tightly closed eyes, spitting out two words concisely, “The beach.”
Kevin was slightly stunned and took a breath to calm himself down, “Have someone change her into clean clothes first, I have fever-reducing medicine, let her take it for observation first, if the fever goes down in the morning, she’ll be fine, if not, send her to the hospital.”
“Okay.”
“Alan, I still have to remind you again,” Kevin stood up and faced Alan directly, “She is a living person, I don’t care how you married her into the family, she is a good girl. Even if you don’t like her, don’t torture her.”
Alan’s voice was deep, “Go get the medicine.”
Kevin only thought that Alan was not listening to his words at all, her face turned livid, clenched his fist and left indignantly.
It was late at night.
The evening breeze picked up on the balcony and it looked like it was going to rain.
“Mr. Alan, Director Hopkins is a senior worker in the engineering department, he is impeccable in his professionalism, this time he made a mistake, but was forced by Tina, he did not mean to do that. If he gets fired, it may have bad impact.”
Alan’s tone was extremely cold, “But he still did it.”
On the other end of the phone, Jack winced in fear, not daring to advise any further.
“Have HR search for his replacement.”
Alan lit a cigarette with the wind at his back, not smoking much himself instead of being mostly dispersed by the wind, “How’s the investigation of Victor’s death going?”
Jack replied cautiously, “It’s still under investigation, we should have news soon.”
“Have someone keep an eye on Tina.”
“Okay.”
After the phone hung up, Alan extinguished his cigarette butt and walked into the house with strides.
Lexie had already taken the medicine and fallen asleep, still in a feverish coma, with fine beads of sweat on both sides of her pale cheeks, like how she looked that day after he had her had the medicine.
Alan suddenly had a seizure in his heart, and after a long time, he sat down on the edge of the bed and held Lexie’s hand.
Lexie grunted twice in distress, her brow furrowed as if she was caught in a terrible nightmare.
“Lexie,” Alan called her name, but had no any response.
Lexie was having a dream.
It was still the dream of the fire, the dream that had trapped her since she was a child.
The more times she dreamed it, the more it made her wonder if it was a dream or a real memory deep in her mind that she just didn’t quite remember herself.
It was noon when Lexie woke up.
She went to just touch the alarm clock by the bed with her hand.
Eleven o’clock?
She scrambled to lift the covers and get out of bed.
Just then, a ‘click’ sounded on the door, and Alan opened the door and came in with a bowl of porridge in his hand.
“You are awake.”
Lexie only felt embarrassed and reluctantly pulled the corner of her mouth.
[Just woke up. You didn’t go to the office today? I had to go to work.]
“I’ve asked leave for you,” Alan put the porridge down and said with a straight face, “so you don’t have to go to the work today, have something to eat.”
[No, the prep for the library’s recent expansion project is particularly important, and I can’t just take leave.]
As soon as the words left her mouth, Alan pressed her shoulder and directly pressed her down, “I told you, I’ve asked leave for you, your current state is not suitable for any high-intensity work.”
Lexie felt that it was a bit unbelievable that he was suddenly so patient to reason with her, and sat back on the bed in a daze.
“Have some porridge,” Alan pointed to the bed, “seafood porridge.”
Lexie shook her head.
[Thanks, I don’t have much of an appetite. Put it there for now.]
Alan frowned, a hint of sulks creeping up between his eyebrows, clearly a precursor to anger.
Lexie tensed up reflexively, her face ghastly white.
Seeing that she was weak and timid, Alan was suddenly annoyed in his heart, and half a minute later, he pressed his emotions back in, reached out with his long arm and picked up the bowl.
“Open your mouth.”
Lexie looked at the spoon raised to her mouth in disbelief.
