Chapter 23
Gordan seemed to also be preparing for his programming exam. By the time exams ended, it was already Friday.
With her backpack slung over her shoulder, Mayra somehow found herself on the main shopping streets near her school. Suddenly, her attention was drawn by the familiar sound of the news announcement. Content is © 2024 NôvelDrama.Org.
"Mr. Barlow from Everton Corporation paid a visit to Orion Corporation in Candor City today.
"The two companies have agreed on a strategic cooperation concerning the development of Southbank. Mr. Barlow has also brought his fiancee along to the luxurious business banquet this evening."
Mayra lifted her head and turned toward the big screen on the towering building. On it, she saw Isabel dressed in a champagne-colored custom-made gown with pearls around her neck. Her hair was elegantly swept into a bun, and her skin was white as snow.
With a gentle smile, Isabel held onto Anderson's arm with a wine glass in her other hand. She radiated poise and elegance, attracting the attention of all the guests present.
Similarly, Anderson, who was casually chatting with his business partners, also stood out in the crowd. His unparalleled dominance made it impossible for anyone to ignore him.
As Mayra took in the scene before her, she couldn't help but sigh. "The both of you… are truly a match made in heaven!"
There was probably no one in this world who wouldn't be enamored by a woman as beautiful as Isabel.
Upon reflection, Mayra realized that it was also Isabel's talent and beauty that fueled her jealousy and caused her to lose herself in her past life.
Hearing cars honking on the street, Mayra tore her gaze away from the big screen. Coincidentally, the news announcement also happened to conclude at that moment.
Drawing from her memory, Mayra made her way to an open-air barbecue restaurant. It was a bustling spot that was packed with customers each night.
It was now only slightly past seven, and the place would usually only start getting busy at around nine.
"Young lady, you look rather familiar. Judging by your uniform, are you also a student at Stuyvesant High?" A middle-aged man approached her.
He was wearing a white chef's uniform, and his head was completely bald. He was the head chef at the restaurant and his name was Mike.
Mayra nodded. "Yes, I am. Mister, I'm here for Gordan. Is he here?"
Mike replied, "What a coincidence. Another young lady also came to look for Gordon five minutes ago. They're still in the kitchen talking right now. It's a little dirty in there, do you need me to get him for you?"
Mayra looked toward the kitchen and saw Emily squatting on the ground, washing vegetables. At that moment, Mayra seemed to have caught on.
She withdrew her gaze and said, "No need. I would appreciate it if you would not tell Gordan that I came looking for him." With that Mayra thanked him and left.
Mike was left utterly confused. "Huh? You're leaving just like that?"
Upon arriving home, Mayra started sulking alone. She had nearly forgotten that in her past life, Emily had feelings for Gordan.
Back then, Emily had pursued Gordan fervently. When she was later sent abroad by Anderson, she found out from a news article that Emily and Gordan got married.
Unfortunately, their happiness was short-lived as Emily tragically passed away on the operating table, alongside their unborn child.
This memory had suddenly resurfaced in Mayra's mind by chance. Moreover, it had been a long time since then, and she had merely come across it in the newspaper. No one knew for certain if Emily and Gordan truly had any contact with each other.
Mayra had taken the last bus home, and by the time she was done washing up, it was already 8:30 p.m..
With her damp hair, Mayra blankly stared at the textbook in front of her. Eventually, feeling frustrated, she grabbed the book and hurled it to the ground.
…
At around midnight, Gordon changed out of his chef uniform and was just about to leave when he saw Emily walking over with a basket of freshly washed vegetables in her hands.
"Gordan, where should I put this?"
