Rescued, but at what cost?
Sofie’s POV
“Roman, please don’t sleep. Don’t leave me alone in this world. Don’t even think of going anywhere without me!” I screamed when Roman groaned again and fluttered his eyes closed.
With a painful growl, he weakly flapped his eyes open and threw me a small smile.
He gasped as he slowly stretched his arm outward toward me. When he saw that it was pointless and he could not reach me, he groaned again and gave up.
“I’m going out for a smoke.” Alexander said, and without as much as a backward glance, he exited the building.
I had no idea why he was even there or what his relationship with Lana was, but at that moment, his presence wasn’t important to me, Roman’s life was.
I burst into fresh tears as I watched him fight for his life on the floor, which was now a mini pool of his blood.
I wanted to be by his side so bad. I wanted to reassure him that everything would eventually be fine, even though the future seemed bleak.
“If I can’t have him, no one should.” Lana changed as she reappeared, holding a stick.
I writhed against the pole, desperately trying to break the chains, and stop Lana from proceeding with her psychopathic activities.
But all my efforts proved to be futile as Lana bashed Roman’s head multiple times with the stick while muttering something incoherent.
I watched in horror, with tears rolling down my cheeks as Roman’s head cracked open and blood started flowing out of it uncontrollably.
“Stop this madness, Lana. What else do you want to do to him? Can’t you see that you’ve already killed him?” I yelled at her but she didn’t even act like I had just spoken to her.
She just giggled like a demented person before she discarded the wood and disappeared again.
I wept bitterly when Roman coughed up blood. “No, my love. Please don’t close your eyes yet. Please fight for me. Fight for us. The baby and I need you. We can’t live without you, Roman.”
At that moment, a stray tear rolled down his cheek as he looked at me.
I could see the effort to stay awake in his eyes. He also wanted to fight but time was rapidly going and help was still yet to arrive.
It was obvious even to the dumbest of persons that Roman was fighting a lost battle to stay alive.
But just like him, I was not about to give up.
“Snap out of it, Roman!” I yelled when his eyes started to close again, and slowly, he forced them open.
I was about to tell him how proud I was of him when I heard the sound of sirens rapidly approaching.
That reinvigorated my hope and I darted him a smile. “Do you hear that, Roman? They’re coming. You’re going to be fine, do you hear me?”
He just groaned again in response.
My smile instantly evaporated when Lana came back. By then, the sound of the sirens had gotten much louder.
“Have fun getting married to his corpse.” She spat before picking up an empty flower vase nearby and smashing it on Roman.
Roman choked out a cough before his eyes flickered shut and his body went still.
I saw my life flash right in front of my eyes as I watched his motionless body.
“Get up, Roman. They’re almost here.” I screamed but he remained lifeless.
Lana scoffed before quickly scampering out of the building.
Three of her men were still left in the building including the guy that had forced me into the van that day.
“Enjoy a happy married life with President Giovanni.” He said, and the other two men laughed.
Just as they were also about to scurry out of the building, multiple gunshots rang from behind me and in a twinkle of an eye, they had been gunned down to the ground.
I looked to my right and saw a couple of armed policemen, some paramedics who were carrying a stretcher and Damien.
“They’re not dead. We still need to interrogate them.” One of the cops said.
“Roman.” I said, motioning to his bloodied form on the floor.
“He’s not breathing anymore. He was breathing earlier before she came a-and struck him with that vase. Please do something, I can’t lose him.” I wept as the policemen unshackled me from the pole.
“Calm down, Sofie.” Damien said, taking off his jacket and wrapping it around my shoulders.
“I-I can’t!” I yelled.
“If not for yourself, then do it for your baby.” He retorted. “Or do you want to kill them?”
“I-err,” I stuttered, watching the paramedics attempt to resuscitate Roman.
“Look at me, Sofie and take a deep breath.” Damien grabbed my shoulders and looked into my eyes.
I obliged him and inhaled shakily. “I’ve done that.”
“I know it’s not easy but please calm down. Let them do their job.” He said, leading me to sit on a pile of bricks.
“I can’t sit down, Damien. I need to know what’s going on with him. Is he going to make it?” I asked, my voice shaking at the end.
“Definitely. Roman is a fighter. He survived a ghastly car accident when he was young without a single scratch. I know he’ll surely come out of this healthy.” Damien attempted to reassure me.
“But he didn’t get shot, did he?” I whispered and inhaled again.
Damien just sighed.
“I saw everything happen, Damien. I watched that evil wench shoot him thrice in the chest, and I couldn’t do anything. I’m so fucking useless.” I shook my head as tears blurred my vision.
Damien was about to say something when we heard a loud thud followed by rushed conversations among the paramedics.
I watched, with my heart hammering against my ribs as more paramedics crowded Roman.
“Please, let me see him.” I screamed, as I pushed through the cops and team of paramedics.

“Leave me alone, Damien. I can’t take this anymore.” I glared at the man before I webbed my way through the tightly-knitted circle.
I fell to my knees as a strangled sob escaped my throat when I saw him.
His shirt had been unbuttoned, his face and lips were ghostly pallor and a defibrillator was being used to attempt to revive him.
I could tell they had been at it for a while and it didn’t seem to be working.
My vision became fuzzy as my legs quivered with dread.
Various dimmed-out voices floated into my head, as I watched them pack up the defibrillator solemnly before a white cloth was drawn over Roman.
I shook my head as I desperately wished that moment to be a nightmare.
“No, this can’t be happening.” That was the last thing I said before my legs finally gave in under me and I slipped into unconsciousness.
