Chapter 172
Selena gently took Heather's hand, her tone reassuring yet determined. "Heather, I'm going to expose Kent for who he really is and get you the justice you deserve. Before long, you'll be free to divorce him and start fresh." "Don't lose hope. There's a bright future ahead, and things will get better."
Selena's words, spoken with care, seeped into Heather's consciousness, sparking a tiny flame of hope in her eyes. With a voice raspy and broken, Heather managed to ask, "Can I really start over?"
"Absolutely," Selena assured with a smile meant to inspire confidence. "I'm the lead journalist at Ink & Insight. Trust me on this!"
Heather's hand tightened around Selena's, clutching it like a lifeline.
After leaving Heather, Selena threw herself into gathering evidence. She went beyond hospital records, speaking and capturing the testimonies of neighbors, friends, and the household staff. Thanks to the cameras Heather had set up for her dog's safety, Selena managed to get hold of the footage. After nearly two sleep-deprived days, she finally spotted a clip of domestic violence.
Heather was feeding her dog when a drunken Kent barged in, clearly in a foul mood, and yanked her by the hair, trying to drag her to the bedroom. The loyal dog barked and bit Kent, only to be kicked away violently. Heather tried to protect the dog, but Kent attacked them both, leaving the dog motionless and Heather bloodied, yet he still dragged her into the bedroom.
The footage cut off there, but Heather's anguished screams echoed in the recording.
Selena slammed her laptop shut, her entire being consumed by anger at such cruelty. With solid evidence in hand, she was determined to make Kent pay dearly.
The next day, running on just a few hours of sleep, Selena organized the evidence and headed to the hospital. She needed to confirm the details with Heather before publishing her article, making sure nothing was missed.
When she reached the hospital room, she found both Heather and Kent there.
Kent, looking every bit the bully, sneered, "So, you're the one poking around, huh? Hand over what you've got and get back to Newport, or else!"
Heather, with blood at the corner of her lips, ignored her own danger and urgently shouted, "Don't listen to him. Run!"
"Shut up, you!" Kent barked, striking Heather hard enough for her to faint.
As much as Selena wanted to fight back, she knew she couldn't take on Kent. If he caught her, the evidence would be lost and so would Heather's chance for justice. She bolted for the door.
Kent, enraged by her defiance, pulled a knife and chased her.
Selena narrowly dodged several swings, her heart racing, but she clutched her laptop, determined to keep the evidence safe.
She reached the elevator and
frantically pressed the close button, knowing safety was just a few floors away. Just as the doors were about to close, a hand forced them open, revealing Kent's twisted face as he lunged with the knife. "Go to hell!"
Selena's face drained of color, her heart nearly stopping as she instinctively shut her eyes. But instead of pain, she heard Kent's pained howl as he was knocked to the ground. Property belongs to Nôvel(D)r/ama.Org.
Then, she felt herself being pulled into a protective embrace, the arms around her trembling.
